Store credit vs cashback — which drives repeat orders?

₹1,000+

The Problem

Both reward types drive referrals, but have different retention impacts. Merchants pick wrong type, lose LTV.

When setting up your referral program, you decide: what do I give the referrer? Store credit? Cashback? A gift? They all cost roughly the same, but their impact on customer lifetime value is wildly different.

Store credit forces customers to return to your store to redeem it. Cashback pays them once and they're done — no guaranteed repeat purchase. Gifts create delight but don't drive transactions. Most merchants don't realize this difference until months later when they see store credit redeemers buying 2-3x more than cashback recipients.

The wrong choice means you're paying for referrals but not building long-term customer value. You get one-time advocates instead of loyal repeat buyers.

When This Applies

Recommended For

  • •Deciding referrer reward structure
  • •AOV ₹1,000+ (cashback less effective <₹1,000)
  • •Want repeat purchases, not just one-time referrals
  • •Selling products with repeat purchase potential (consumables, fashion, accessories)

Not Recommended For

  • •Service business (nothing to buy again with store credit)
  • •Very high-ticket one-time purchases (₹50,000+ wedding jewelry)
  • •Digital products (subscription model is different)

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Choose store credit as default (unless exception applies)

›Review "when to use cashback" criteria

›If none apply → Store credit is optimal

2

Set credit amount = friend discount amount

›Friend gets ₹300 off → Referrer gets ₹300 credit

›Keeps it simple, feels fair

›Symmetric rewards are easier to communicate

3

Set expiry window (90-180 days)

›Sweet spot: 90 days for consumables, 180 days for fashion/accessories

›Too short (<60 days): Feels pushy, low redemption

›Too long (>180 days): No urgency, credit forgotten

›Align with natural reorder cycle if applicable

4

Configure in Referbro

›Referrer reward type: Store credit

›Amount: ₹300 (or your calculated amount)

›Expiry: 90 days

›Auto-deposit after friend's order confirmed

5

Set up credit reminder emails

›Email 1: Credit deposited (immediate)

›Email 2: Reminder at 60 days ("₹300 credit expires in 30 days")

›Email 3: Final reminder at 85 days ("₹300 credit expires in 5 days!")

6

Make credit visible in account dashboard

›Show credit balance prominently

›"You have ₹300 in store credit. Use it now →"

›Apply at checkout automatically (or show option)

7

Track redemption metrics

›Redemption rate: Target 60-75%

›Days to redemption: Track average (optimize reminder timing)

›AOV of redemption orders: Should be >credit amount

›Repeat rate of referrers: Compare credit vs cashback cohorts

8

Optimize based on data

›If redemption <50%: Extend expiry, improve reminder emails

›If redemption >80%: Shorten expiry slightly (create more urgency)

›If redemption AOV = credit amount: People only buying what credit covers (bad)

›Encourage larger purchases in reminder emails

Primary Success Indicator

North Star Metric

Store Credit Redemption Rate

Target 65-75% redemption rate within 90 days, driving 30-40% LTV increase vs cashback

| Credit expiry waste rate | Referbro → Credits expired unused ÷ total credits issued | Keep below 25%; above 40% means your reminder emails or expiry window need adjusting |

Common Mistakes to Avoid

No expiry on store credit

Credit sits in accounts forever, never redeemed
Becomes forgotten, doesn't drive urgency
Liability accumulates on your balance sheet
Fix: 90-180 day expiry, clearly communicated

Expiry too short (<60 days)

Customers feel rushed, brand perception suffers
Many don't have immediate need, credit expires
Low redemption rate, wasted reward cost
Fix: Align with product reorder cycle (90 days for consumables)

Using cashback for consumable products

Perfect opportunity to drive repeat purchase (reorders)
Cashback = missed opportunity for loyalty building
Fix: Always use credit for products with repeat potential

Credit amount too low to care about

₹50 credit on ₹2,000 AOV store (2.5% of AOV)
Customer doesn't bother redeeming, feels worthless
Fix: Credit should be 10-25% of AOV minimum

No reminder emails

Credit issued, customer forgets
Expires unused, no LTV gain
Fix: 3-email sequence (deposit, 30 days before expiry, 5 days before)

Credit not visible in account

Hidden in email or notification only
Customer logs in, doesn't see credit balance
Forgets to use it
Fix: Prominent display in account dashboard, cart page

Manual credit application at checkout

Customer has to remember to apply credit
Many forget, miss out on using it
Frustration when they realize post-purchase
Fix: Auto-apply credit at checkout (show what's being applied)
