Using referral rewards to drive bundle purchases
The Problem
Referral rewards are usually fixed amounts. Bundling rewards with purchase minimums drives higher AOV from referred customers.
Most referral programs work like this: "Give ₹200, Get ₹200." Simple, but it treats all purchases equally. A friend buying a ₹800 single item gets ₹200 off. Another friend buying a ₹2,500 bundle also gets ₹200 off. You're paying the same reward for 3x the revenue.
Worse: you're not incentivizing friends to buy more. They take the discount on whatever they were already going to buy (usually the minimum). You miss the opportunity to drive larger baskets from referred customers who are already warmed up and ready to purchase.
The result: referrals work, but referred customer AOV stays flat or even dips below your average (because they're hunting for the cheapest qualifying item to use the discount).
When This Applies
Recommended For
- •Sell bundleable products (skincare sets, baby care kits, health supplements)
- •AOV ₹1,000+ (enough room for bundles)
- •Want referrals + AOV boost combined
- •Products have natural bundle points (3-step routine, starter pack, family pack)
Not Recommended For
- •Single-SKU brands (only one product to buy)
- •Very low AOV (<₹500, not enough margin for bundle incentives)
- •Services or digital products (nothing to "bundle")
Recommended Approach
Bundle Reward Structure
Instead of:
Try:
Why This Works
- Friend perspective: "I need to spend ₹1,500 to get ₹300 off, so let me build a bundle"
- Adds complementary products (moisturizer + serum + cleanser)
- Higher perceived value (bigger discount on bigger order)
- Your perspective:
- Friend spends ₹1,500 instead of ₹800 (₹700 extra revenue)
- You give ₹300 discount instead of ₹200 (₹100 extra cost)
- Net gain: ₹600 extra revenue per referral
- Referrer perspective:
- Bigger reward because friend spent more
- Example: ₹400 credit (vs ₹200 credit on smaller order)
- More motivated to share
The Math
Scenario 1: Flat Discount (No Minimum)
- Friend spends: ₹800
- Discount: ₹200
- Your revenue: ₹600
- Referrer reward: ₹200 credit
- Total cost: ₹400
Scenario 2: Bundle Discount (With Minimum)
- Friend spends: ₹1,500 (to get ₹300 off)
- Discount: ₹300
- Your revenue: ₹1,200
- Referrer reward: ₹400 credit (higher because friend spent more)
- Total cost: ₹700
- Net difference: +₹600 revenue, -₹300 cost = +₹300 net gain
Step-by-Step Setup
Identify natural bundle points
›Look at your product catalog
›What do customers typically buy together?
›Examples:
›Beauty: Cleanser + Toner + Moisturizer (3-step routine)
›Baby: Diapers + Wipes + Cream (diaper bundle)
›Health: Vitamin C + D3 + Omega 3 (wellness bundle)
Calculate bundle threshold
›Add up prices of typical 2-3 product bundles
›Set threshold slightly below natural bundle total
›Example: 3-product bundle naturally ₹1,800 → Set threshold ₹1,500
›Gives friend flexibility to choose within bundle range
Set friend discount with minimum
›Format: "₹X off ₹Y+ order"
›Example: "₹300 off ₹1,500+ order"
›Discount should be 20-25% of minimum
›Example: ₹300 ÷ ₹1,500 = 20%
Set referrer reward (scaled to friend spend)
›Option A: Fixed higher amount (₹400-₹500 credit)
›Option B: Percentage of friend's order (10% of ₹1,500 = ₹150)
›Recommended: Fixed amount for simplicity
Create pre-made bundles at threshold price
›Make it easy for friends to reach threshold
›Example bundles:
›"Skincare Starter Kit" - ₹1,499
›"New Mom Essentials" - ₹1,599
›"Daily Wellness Pack" - ₹1,499
›Show these bundles on referral landing page
Configure in Referbro
›Friend discount: ₹300 off
›Minimum order: ₹1,500
›Referrer reward: ₹400 store credit
›Auto-apply discount (no coupon codes needed)
Communicate the bundle value
›Referral message: "Get ₹300 off when you try the 3-step routine"
›Landing page: Show bundle options prominently
›Cart: "Add ₹X more to unlock your ₹300 discount"
Track and optimize
›Metric: AOV of referred orders vs non-referred
›Target: 25-40% higher AOV from referrals
›If friends aren't reaching minimum, lower threshold by 10%
›If too many reach it easily, raise threshold by 10%

Bundle Attachment Rate
Target >25% of referred customers purchasing bundled offers (vs standard single items)
| Referrer reward issuance (higher tier) | Referbro → Credits issued at ₹400 tier vs ₹200 tier | More than 60% of referrer credits should be at the higher amount, confirming friends are reaching the bundle minimum |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Minimum too high for natural bundles
Your minimum: ₹2,500
Friends have to buy 4-5 products (feels forced)
Fix: Set minimum at 1.2-1.3x of natural bundle price
No pre-made bundles visible
Don't know what to add to reach ₹1,500
Abandon because it's too much work
Fix: Create "Recommended Bundles" section on referral landing page
Same reward for referrer regardless of friend spend
Friend spends ₹1,800 → Referrer still gets ₹200
No incentive for referrer to encourage larger purchases
Fix: Scale referrer reward (₹200 for ₹800, ₹400 for ₹1,500+)
Minimum applies to ALL orders (not just referred)
Hurts normal conversion, just to boost referrals
Fix: Minimum only for referred friends, not site-wide
Complex tiered minimums
Confuses friends, analysis paralysis
Fix: One simple tier (₹300 off ₹1,500+)
Not showing progress to minimum
Doesn't know they need ₹600 more for discount
Checks out at ₹900, discount doesn't apply, frustrated
Fix: Cart banner showing "Add ₹600 more to unlock ₹300 off"
Bundles priced exactly at minimum
After discount (₹300), bundle becomes ₹1,200
But if they add one more ₹99 item (total ₹1,599), same ₹300 discount
Friends game the system by finding cheapest path
Fix: Bundles should be ₹1,499 (just under minimum) so friends add small items to reach ₹1,500
